A new surf shop is opening on the corner of Pacific and Washington Blvd. in December. What defines a surf shop these days? A beach themed clothing store with some boards leaning against the back wall?

all surf shops will soon be east of lincoln….What would be so wrong with that?
You could consider Costco a surf shop. They sell surfboards.
The crap they call surfboards are for to two kinds of people: One type is the surfing instructor who needs cheap sh*t to loan to students. The other type is for people who only want to try surfing and don't know any better.

…commercial indicator of displacement of surf culture by upscale boutique/culinary culture? Most surf shops in CA are close to the beach…it just makes sense.
Correction: When referring to surfing please call it what it is- a subculture.
Does that sound antiquated?

The good thing about Costco is no matter how many times you break the boards they will replace them for free. Your right it is good for a beginner.

OfflineThe new owner is charging $10/sq foot + triple net for 1624 AK… that's around $30,000 per month. With the Jin Patisserie lease going for 40,000/month we can pretty much say goodbye to any creative heart-based company remaining on the street. It'll be all about the bottom line… commercialism 1st and foremost for any lease that comes up from here on…. I guess this is it…. I'll have to move East.

OfflineI predict AK will soon resemble 3rd Street in SM- all flagship stores that you would normally see in a shopping mall. But do not worry your cool-cat little heads off, Venetians. By national standards AK will still be a very hip place for tourists to visit so we will still be viewed as the hip, artsy trend-setters that we are.
Keep in mind that SM and Venice are no longer just beach communities. Tourism which is driving the economy needs to occur all year round, not just summer. Yes, high season will always be the warmer months but don't expect that to dictate the draw that has become AK.
Who knows? One side effect of all this is that maybe OFW will get cleaned up and go up scale. At this point I would almost welcome that.

It'll be all about the bottom line…
For the last couple of years, most the new businesses in town have fancy NYC or LA P.R. firms they pay good money to do "P.R." – the "P.R." people then try and get me to put stories up about their clients for free. My policy is that the first story about a new place goes up, as that is news and the readers want the news. After that a business should advertise if they want people to know about their new menu changes or sales …
Unless there is a change and more local businesses start advertising on Yo! Venice!, you will see this website shuttered too. I hear a lot of "I love Yo! Venice! and we read it every day … but business is great, we don't need to advertise!". I can't keep spending my savings to make this site work, so … yeah … we'll see.

Bret, I sent you a message quite awhile back regarding my boss advertising on here but never heard back, was thinking it was cause we are in Santa Monica on Main St so did follow-up but I really want him to advertise here cause I think YoVenice rocks, message me and we can make arrangements tomorrow.
