Demolition has begun to transform the historic Venice Post Office into production offices and a screening room for the new owner, producer Joel Silver.

Venice Post Office Demolition

Michael King of Studio of Architecture notes via The Venice Stakeholders Association:

"They do not technically have a permit to demolish the stairs and handicap access ramp. Unfortunately, they were issued an 'early start demolish' permit (attached). These permits are the curse of historic preservationists."

A request has been sent to Councilman Rosendahl's office to find out what is going on … will update when we get the Councilman's response.

Update: Mike Bonin at Councilman Rosendahl's office says: "We have alerted LADBS and asked them to send an inspector out right away and report back".

Update 2: from Building & Safety:

Our Inspector stopped the job since the work done was not covered under the active permits. The contractor jumped the gun on work that is currently in plan check for review.  According to the permittee, the work proposed replaces current ramps and stairs that are not disabled access compliant.  We will monitor the job closely to make sure that only permitted work is preformed.

Seems he has some experience with restoration of historic buildings…crossing fingers that he will proceed with respect and engage the community, who have a deep connection and concern for this local historic resource.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going down tomorrow to get a piece of those urine stairs to put next to my piece of the Berlin Wall and pet rock.

Went to the new Venice Post Office today. Tried to buy stamps over the counter, wanted stamps with numerical value. THEY WERE OUT OF ALL STAMPS. The supervisor that orders stamps was on vacation, no stamps.

I would have thought this genius would have planned for his absence and stocked up on the little buggers.

The parking lot for the post office is covered with black grit, very strange for a new facility and very dirty.

The new urination spot is between the flag pole and the blue mail boxes.

The Venice Postmaster has another place to ruin, all we need is some grafitti on the wall.

Dirty, dirty, dirty.

I buy my stamps at Ralphs. Most chain grocery stores sell them at the register ;)

Who knew? It never would have occurred to me that the supermarket might carry postage stamps. Thanx for the info Ladidadi.  =^.^=

Costco (and probably other similar like Sam's Club et al.) sell "Forever" stamps at a (teeny) discount, even.
