The basketball courts at the Venice Beach Recreation Center are currently getting a facelift. The project will replace the backboards and resurface the courts. The new surface will be a smooth blacktop.
Construction was originally slated to be finished by July 12th, but as the project started behind schedule it is now expected the courts will reopen at the end of July. The south-west court is presently still open for play.

the timing coincides with the area being designated a park complete with new signage (advertising)
as is the case with the zip line (ferris wheell), i believe they have a master plan, and are only pushing projects through one at a time as to avoid a huge backlash, you only have to look as far as marina del rey to see how effective this tactic is
