Located at 1624 Abbot Kinney since 1998, the awesome Surfing Cowboys will be moving from Abbot Kinney this Friday, March 1st. Their new location will be an easily reachable 2.8 miles away at 12553 Venice Blvd. Surfing Cowboys are excited about their new space, which is larger and also has lots of parking!

The Mystic Journey Bookstore, which is currently located at 1319 Abbot Kinney, will be moving into the space in "late spring".

Another example of how to turn "The Coolest Street in America" into one like every other.

Sucks the Cowboys got priced out, but a relief that Mystic Journey is going in. I heard from a good source that The Gap was a strong contender for the space, but The Gap representative did take it to heart that the community would NOT be psyched on a Gap going in there.

Funny thing about Gap.

There used to be a Gap store where American Apparel is now on Main St in SM.

Also, I'll never forget the shock I felt when I saw a Gap store on the Haight in SF.

I'm salty and that's what keeps me spicy ©

My understanding is that the owner of the property was opposed to any chain stores taking over the space, and was only interested in it being a locally owned independent business.  The Mystic Journey was forced out of its current space when the city ordered the landlord to demolish half the store and turn it back into 4 unusable parking spaces.  Losing half the space would have made the bookstore unprofitable.

I also understand that the bookstore signed a long-term lease on the new property, so they plan on being around for a while.

And with all due respect to Davidicusrex, the Mystic Journey is a big part of what makes Abbot Kinney cool – and is one of the biggest assets to the neighborhood.

Now I just have to remember to hold my nose when I'm at the end of Abbot Kinney instead of the center. Their books might be wonderful, I can't go in or stand if front of the store without getting an extreme sinus headache from the overpowering stench of their incense.

Since Abbot Kinney has been deemed the coolest street in America. That must mean Abbot Kinney's landlords are the coolest landlords in America as well.
