http://www.YoVenice.com, on Flickr">Ocean Front Walk

We have received an email signed by multiple residents that live near Ocean Front Walk and 25th asking that the nightly dog gathering be moved as it is saturating the ground with the stench of dog defecation. The residents, while pet lovers themselves, want the "Sunset Crew" to realize that "the stench of urine and feces caused by the sheer volume of pets brought to this one location all day long is constant and unneighborly".

It is suggested that the "Sunset Crew" and those that use this area during the day change their meeting location to either the wide grassy knoll at 23rd and Ocean Front Walk (where the odors and noise will be set back from the houses far enough it should be a non-issue) or the grass in front of 27th and Ocean Front Walk as there is presently a large vacant lot there.

Be neighborly dog owners, and help these residents out by using an alternate location before they have to go to the city to solve this issue. Off leash tickets will not be fun and will be the only way the residents can try and curtail what they see as a large problem. Please pass the info on to other dog owners that there are more appropriate areas to meet.

The folks complaining live near or on OFW? For the smell of dog crap to invade their home they would have to live right on OFW and even then I doubt the odor would invade their living space.

I frequent that area with my dog and I always, always, always carry poop bags so that I can pick up after her. Are you seriously saying that they smell dog crap?

F  em'!

Sorry you can't be serious. At that location it is most likely bum sh*t. People clean up after their dogs but no one cleans up after the bums

Well, that's probably true. Bum piss is by far the most prevalent of noxious odor from SM to Venice.

As a dog owner and a neighbor, allow me to say "F*ck them."

It's not their yard, its OUR beach.

The stench (the ocean itself smells stronger) is because the city has not watered or cared for the grass for some time now. I have lived by this particular area for 20 years. The dog population out front is down at present from the old days. I have no neighbors home on either side very often so they didn't complain and I didn't complain. Maybe it's the people at 25__ down the street who let their dog out to poop and then open the gate for it to get back in. No clean up from them!

^There's ways to deal with people like that. Leave them a "mess"age.

If indeed there are "smell" issues, then perhaps the people who are walking their dogs should always use doggy poop bags and tie them before throwing them into the trash cans. There has been a few people using a pooper scooper and throwing the raw poop into the trash can.

Also the resident on OFW that releases the dog from the front gate and rarely picks up the poop should be noted. They live half-way between 26th Avenue and 25th Avenue in a beautiful light brown structure. Their house-keeper is better about picking up the poop than the owners. I guess they are too rich to pick up after their animal. Not sure why they have a dog either.

The previous poster mentioned about the lack of watering of the grassy area. I am not sure what the City of Los Angeles is planning or not planning reagrding maintenance of the park area. I agree the grass should be watered because all of it is dying.

I don't think the complainer has really thought all this through.

Remember Venice is also known as "Dog Town"!

We also go around and pick up other dogs poop so we don't step in it. There are inland neighbors who bring their dogs to the beach and think it is OK to just let their animals crap and feel it is OK to not pick it up! We don't agree and are constantly picking up other dogs poop. We call it "Karma Poop".

Solutions:

Get the city to water the grass again.

Use poop bags.

Get others to pick up after their dogs.

Someone lets their horse shit out front of my house all the time. Right by the curb in the dirt so you can't see it. Horses are smart. Anyway, someone on block nailed a box full of plastic shopping bags to a palm tree and wrote on said box, "C'mon, Really" or something close to that. I don't know if it helped. I didn't survey the area before and after.  I appreciated the gesture. The box is gone now, and the Horse is still making deposits. I am going to set up a camera. The owner of the horse will feel my wrath. And by wrath I mean if I see them I will passive aggressivly and timidly say loudly to myself "like, pick it up, cmon" and hope they hear me. That or I will follow them home and shit on their doorstep. Win win.

The only way to affect people who are already unwilling to be civil is to shame them. In a group. It has to come from multiple people at once. They may, out of protest, not pick up the poop that broke the camels back but I bet in the future to avoid lynching they would come around and eventually make a good habit of it.

Just a bit of it really, South of Pico. And, you could make the case that it extends South to Windward… if you know your history.

This is definitely people looking for something to complain about!

The people who gather there are super friendly and always watch after their dogs and pick up their poop as far as I have seen. I think it's a great spot where locals can come together.

I've NEVER noticed a funky smell there! People need something better to do with their time.

HELLLLLLLLLL NO!!  Don't move to 23rd, that is where I live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(whoever made the initial complaint can simply call the police department to complain as half the sunset dog-poopers are drinking cocktails – I am pretty sure that is illegal…)

And just to follow-up with the person that noted the city doesn't care for that lawn….  They actually re-sodded/fertilized the area not too long ago ( and do look after it (ie water, etc) but maybe too much dog piss kills grass?

yeah- and why don't you go piss on everyone else's parade while you're at it, guy? look, these people are homeowners and renters enjoying an evening after work with their dogs- not homeless drug addicts looking to rob people for a fix.

i can't speak about the rest of the people on this board, but part of the reason i moved here is FREEDOM- being able to responsibly enjoy myself without someone nosing in and calling the cops about some wine in a paper cup when they're really just sore about something else. move to santa monica, guy. you'll fit right in there if you keep up being a jerk.

Uh, history according to whom? A movie or a person, and from what decade are you referring to?

BTW- I'm not trying to start a pissing match with you. When I moved to Venice in the 70's, SM was Dogtown and Venice was Venice. Yes, many of the little thugs on skateboards were from Venice, or should I say they're parents lived in Venice and the Z skate apartment/clubhouse was on Pacific Ave near 25th, but back them DT was SM and the DT name predated the skateboarding re-explosion.

No movies. Just locals. Let's piss. A lot of Venice is more accurately "Ghost Town" and the origins of GT go all the way back to the days of AK himself.

I'm not going to get into the names used on more Northern reaches of SM…

That's what I'm saying. "Locals" from what decade?

By a lot of Venice being GT, you mean everything east of what is now called AK/Main, between Washington to the south and Rose Ave to the north?

I always figured the "Ghost Town" moniker was a straight-up racist relic and would best be set aside next to phrases employing "colored" "dago" and the like.  But perhaps I'm mistaken.

Yes dog piss kills grass – but for that matter everywhere. So why don't we all kill our dogs and make a couple of dog haters happy.
Most of the people I konw from the 'sunset crowd' actually do not only pick up their dog's poop but also some of the shit left by dogs from guys coming to the beach on the weekends that could not be bothered to pick it up themselves.

Now you can weigh if you'd rather IMAGINE smelling the piss from the dogs of the 'sunset crowd' or all the smelly left overs not removed by responsible neighbors.

I also find it funny to suggest moving something YOU hate to a location where it might bother someone else. Nice neighbor!

As for the scoopers…that is actually yuckie!
