(36 votes) From the Venice Neighborhood Council:
The “Great Observation Wheel”, a giant 200 foot tall Ferris wheel proposed for Venice Beach, has been put on “hold” following the Venice Neighborhood Council’s April 17th Board Meeting.
Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl has asked the Los Angeles Parks and Recreation Department, which was considering the project, to stop the process for now.
From Councilman Rosendahl:
"I've instructed my staff to work with Rec and Park on another one of its proposals to install a zipline at Venice Beach. This is an additional element for excitement, it's easy to install, and it could generate revenue this summer to help the City maintain restrooms at the number one beach in the world. The Great Observation Wheel is an idea that needs more time for vetting.
Of course, a zipline needs to be presented to the community. I've already been in touch with the Venice Neighborhood Council President. I proposed to her that she put this item on the agenda for me at the May 15th meeting so we can vet this proposal and see how the community feels. If it makes sense, it could be installed this summer and generate an immediate revenue stream."

OfflineI know I'll sound like a hater – but this is about the cheesiest thing I've ever seen. Let's do what panama beach florida is doing – heck, why don't we turn venice beach into a spring break destination…
Here's a novel idea – let's clean up the boardwalk, make it safe, up the quality of restaurants and retail, and the increased revenues and taxes will more than pay for keeping the beach clean. Keep the grit, the weirdness, the performers, the vegan \*#!%$! and everything that makes Venice great – but let's up our game a bit so we don't have to resort to carnival tricks for tax revenues.

to restate bret's point in another thread--it is completely odd that linda lucks broke this story first in the venice patch, rather than in a VNC news alert.
Linda doesn't want actual dialog with Venice residents, so she goes to Patch.
Besides, hasn't she moved out of Venice?
We already have enough screaming retards on the boardwalk at ground level, we don't need to hear screams above the boardwalk also.

Agree, we need to keep this carnival sh*t at the Santa Monica pier.
