Read this letter to the editor in the comments section of the article. The perspective is proper.

This is a recurrent evolution of any cityscape that has an innate appeal to our senses. Venice was created by a speculators fancy (the canals) from tidal wetlands, then became a Jewish ghetto, then a magnet for bohemia providing affordable space for poets (Ginsburg, Ferlinghetti), artists (Kienholtz, Altoon, Irwin, Burden) and musicians (the Doors). It generated a self-perpetuating culture that attracted alternative thinkers and those who liked to watch them. Boardwalk aside, Venice became chic, then commercialized then gentrified. In each phase one economic group displaced another. At some point, Google will also be a part of its past.

The NYTimes writer couldn't resist a good headline.

I think Google should keep Gold's unchanged and use it as their in-house gym.

They already have a climbing wall.

Fact is that Gold's is a national chain whose owner is very right wing and makes

HUGE contributions to conservatives.

Yes, Gold's members, that's where your bucks are going.

I'd much rather have the Google crowd in Venice.

Before your slobberfest with GOOGLE begins you may want to know that CEO Eric Schmidt ain't a whole lot different than any other high powered biz exec. Guys like him play both sides of aisle.

If facts are important to you then check it out.

GOOGLE has spent over 5mil this year alone lobbying their interests to both Democrats and Republicans.

Republicrats? Democans? Who cares. If you have billions to play with you can shape the world to your liking. The rest of us are subdued by the illusion that we actually have a say and that our votes count for anything. 8/

2012 Top contributors: http://www.opensecrets.org/ove…..ntribs.php

#86 Google: $1.25 Million, 70% Democrat, 30% Republican

#22 TRT Holdings: $2.27 Million, 100% Republican.

TRT Holdings is the parent company of Gold's. It's largely owned by Robert Rowling. In 2010 he was one of the biggest contributors to the Republican super PAC "American Crossroads", giving $1 million.. This was beaten by another local favorite, Public Storage, who gave $2.3 million.
