Offline“Microsoft Experience” location where people can “engage and collaborate” with Microsoft and Microsoft products. It will not be a retail store.
That's sounds pretty vague. But if it doesn't generate income via retail or production of products it sounds like a place where MS is going to hemorrhage cash. I wish I had that kind of dough to play with.

OfflineSaltwater – you're thinking about it all wrong. You have a "Mom and Pop" attitude where you judge a business by profit/loss. They aren't even selling things, so it's a total loss, as you correctly point out.
In fact, many of these places are going to loose money.
But think of it as advertising!
Microsoft will get it's name in lights on Abbot Kinney, which is supposedly the hippest street in America. It will cost them a few thousand dollars a month for that, plus a couple of staff members to greet people when they walk in. Compare that to what it would cost them to erect a billboard on AK, even if they could – and Microsoft is getting a bargain.
It's all about the marketing, baby!
It's also a great idea for Microsoft to do it in Venice, as well as other "hip" areas – since they are trying to get away from the idea that Apple is for the hip artists.
Well played, Microsoft.

I'm familiar with the concept of flagship marketing and the halo effect. Look how well it's working for Quicksilver.
Srsly tho, I don't think we have all the facts here.
