From the Venice Beach Oceanarium:

The Venice Beach Oceanarium is a museum without walls. Our mission is to impart a better understanding of the ocean and the life within it, through the arts and the sciences, and to celebrate the unique nature of the surrounding Venice Beach area.

Venice Beach Oceanarium

We have been in operation for over twenty years, providing free educational programming – to Venice and Los Angeles natives and national and internal tourists alike. Our annual events include the popular outdoor reading of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick at the Venice Breakwater, which was included in the LA Weekly’s Best Things To Do In LA, and the yearly grunion party, which introduced the local community and the professional museum world to the fact that Venice Beach has a robust population of grunion, a unique species of fish known for their unusual mating rituals.

The Oceanarium’s efforts are directed toward all those interested in the ocean, especially families and young people. Our featured project, The Venice Fishing Pier Project, began as a way to educate and inspire the public about the ocean surrounding them. The Venice Fishing Pier acts as a magnet for family outings; fishing, taking photos or just strolling – children, parents, grandparents all come together. Many are drawn to ocean gazing; as Herman Melville said, “Meditation and water are wedded forever. Into this community, the Oceanarium presents its canopied classroom. Displaying items actually caught on the pier and lent by generous fisherman, as well as specimens brought from our own collections, participants are encouraged to touch and feel and explore the fascinating shapes that life in the ocean assume. The Oceanarium’s pier installation provides a natural mixing pool for the community and provides a relevant education about local concerns.

Our organization relies on the generosity of friends who believe in our mission and we write to ask you to consider a donation to our cause. We hope that you will support our efforts. The Oceanarium is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a receipt that you can use to document your donation on your taxes. Please send your donations to:

Thank you in advance for your generosity. If you have any questions about our programming and operations, please feel free to contact me directly. I can be reached at 310-817-0875.
