I love how all the peeps making rude, personal and totally unrelated remarks about me, my husband, our relationship, etc., seem to think it's all fair game.  I guess because you're anonymous,

I guess we are ALL waiting for YOU to be less anonymous. Walk the walk LouLou..

If I was a cop in the RHCP incident I would have taken a baton to the side of your head. I think they showed amazing restraint being confronted by a raving lunatic. If you had shut your pie hole and asked nicely they absolutely would have let you pass right through. Do you really think you can yell, scream, and berate a police officer into acquiescing? Who would take them seriously if they let a crazy person scare them into submission? Officers will treat you with the exact amount of respect you give them. Once you raise your voice to them its game over. Oh – and the 'I pay your salary' bit always goes over well – stick with that one…

The obvious questions, though, are why she wasn't permitted to go to her home in the first place, and how long it took her to escalate. Without knowing more, it seems like poor police work to help create a situation rather than simply defusing it before it becomes one.

While we all can agree that yelling wasn't likely to succeed, I think it's also understandable that a person could get pissed off by police not permitting them to get to their home.

(and as for the baton, that's just what the world would need: another as*hole who thinks he's tough when he has a weapon and badge…)

The truth is, there was ALREADY a city ordinance that prevented anyone from camping on OFW before the "curfew"--Which is illegal as it stands, because City of LA has NO PERMIT from California Coastal Commission.  The cops know this--I went to court last week, and Offcr. Bermudez has not filed the citation--a common tactic when the cop knows the ticket is bullshit, and it has been issued just as harassment (BTW, I don't know if it's the same Bermudez-he did say he'd been away for two years, but that's totally circumstantial--it was Sgt. Evans who was the hothead that night--).

I asked for a citation that night, because I wanted to go speak to a judge about the illegality of a curfew being imposed in this way--I was originally told that I could NOT get a citation just by asking, that I would have to risk being put in cuffs and/or going to jail by continuing down the boardwalk, in order to PERHAPs be issued a citation.  That's the point at which we walked away.

OK this is the part of the story that troubles me, I think most of us knew that there would be a court challenge when they first instituted the curfew, we discussed it at length on this page.  I was against the curfew then, and am against it now.

I am totally in favor of direct action, I supported the occupy movement, the citizen who recently filed the appeal on the zip-line, and I even respect the VSA for pushing the city with their various legal threats (even though I typically oppose them).

I applaud you Lou Lou for trying to take a stand, I think it's brave, and as someone who has done a lot of work inside the County Jail system you have more balls than I do on this issue because I don't want to go there on the other side.  I have worked with a lot of LAPD officers and LASD deputies over the years and most are just what you would hope for (and expect) but I have witnessed plenty of occasions where they fell short of that ideal, and I'm sorry for your ordeal.

What seems f#cked up to me is that the LAPD can detain someone, use threats of jail, and then not follow through and let the citizen get their day in court, on behalf of all of us…

Rock on Lou Lou… I still think you were a bit out there during that RHCP show day, but it was nuts that day, what's funny is that we are heading out to see them at Staples tomorrow night…

peace, Rick

I totally support Lou Lou, and I think the police should support her too, they need all the help they can get and a concerned citizen fights for all our rights.

i talked to a man while walking dogs and he said he had been cited on lincoln for riding his bike on the sidewalk. when trying to follow up they kept saying the officer never filed the citation. 1 year later they showed up at his apt at 11:30 pm arrested him on a warrant for the ticket, took him to pacific division, held him for three hours, and released him in the rain at 3:am without a cent in his pocket because they wouldn't let him get dressed at his apt. this guy is late 50's and lives in venice. charges dropped in court. i don't know how that fits "serve and protect".

We all have bad cop stories. My wife and I have been mistreated (financially) by officers who have actually lied in court and misrepresented facts on traffic issues in both Santa Monica and LA but when push comes to shove, we need them out there and like with most government entities, have to take the good with the bad – Cops have the legal authority to tell us what to do and if it seems unreasonable, I never make a fuss because they have stuff like handcuffs, billy clubs, and guns and one can't always tell if they are anxious, breaking up with their boy/girlfriend, under pressure from superiors, had a hard day or just in a bad mood. They are just people – Make a fuss at the DMV and see how long it takes to get your car registered….. Yep, it was a rip and no one likes to be treated as a criminal, but so was a $480 ticket in Santa Monica for not stopping for a pedestrian stepping off a curb that I did not see  in front of a large parked van by Trader Joes on Pico….

What astounds me is how wide spread this punitive treatment by our local cops is. My attitude toward them has really changed over the years, I'm suspicious and I don't trust them.

Spend one day as a cop in Venice and you'll see how normal you'll behave.

Plenty of cops manage to be fine -- which demonstrates that the others don't have an excuse.

The reason for the curfew is to try and stop the vagrant camping on OFW which the Venice yuppies complain about to no end. You want rules and tough cops well they apply to you as well. Sounds like the cops were more than nice to you but since you decided to be a hard ass about some rules which you think you are above well.. you got what you deserved. I dont like cops either but they are people too and if your ass with them they sure as hell are going to be an ass with you.

I went out last night to the beach where there are less lights for the Perseid Meteor Show at 11:58pm at 12:05am the police cruiser raced up on us and kicked us off the beach. But if we had been at the Griffith Observatory, which I believe is also a LA Park, we would have been able to enjoy the meteor show until dawn today.

I have never been for the curfew and while I appreciate that Ozone is cleaner now I still don't believe that restricting my rights, or anyone else's, is the best way to ensure the safety for us all.  And I gotta tell you if the police presence was as strong today back about a year and half ago then we probably would never be having these conversations now cause no one would have been able to camp on OFW and start this whole mess that we now live with.

Love your bike.

And the people you can thank for all of this is Rosendahl and the VNC for their lack of leadership and attention to these problems for years. We have the only NC counsel in the city of Los Angeles that doesn't listen or support the residents of Venice Beach. The lack of leadership truly makes Venice unique in the city of Los Angeles, we have curfews, more than our fair share of crime, homelessness that is out of control, and the only beach community that does not have permit parking. Most of all we need to thank ourselves for electing these A-holes and keeping them in office.
