OfflineI walked past the lot about 7:30pm and running in and out of the bushes along the wall on North Venice were at least 3 very large rats. One of them was almost a foot long in size. Seriously. There's also about 3 homeless folks sleeping on the sidewalk right next to them. Is there anything that can be done about this? I'll make the call if I know who the right people to talk to are. Thanks!

OfflineSend an email to Jim Murez; he manages the Farmers Market and should be concerned about the creatures living there. murez@venice.net

If you had snapped a photo, it would help clean up both problems. The rats and the Transients sleeping on the sidewalk.
Please snap a photo next time, the rats and the people are not shy especially since we want to help this situation.

It's likely they're roof rats. They love untrimmed palm trees and can be a huge pest if they get into attics and crawl spaces. Often people don't even know they have an infestation until their roof springs an unexpected leak. When we lived on the canals 15 years ago I remember they were pretty common. I was told it was because of the close proximity of homes, palm trees, and power lines, which they used as a kind of rat highway.

Offlineepidemics start with unsanitary conditions that invite rats, the rats then help spread disease…
this is just the beginning of a health hazard if the problem is not dealt with swiftly.
Hantavirus, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, Leptospirosis, Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis, Plague, Rat-Bite Fever, Salmonellosis (it is a farmers market on Fridays), Tularemia, whooping cough, dysentery, typhoid are all possibilities
