Sobel should be suing the social service mafia for not doing their job.

The sidewalks are not public parcels available for homesteading as this group of homeless people envision them. Sobel does not care what the residents and businesses of the area are entitled to expect, she has another case to file in court and she expects to win.

The City needs to spend some time explaining what sidewalks are intended to be and how they are acquired and kept up to do this but I doubt that they will try to do it. It needs to document what impact these people are having upon this neighborhood by living on these sidewalks, and they will not do that, either. The City needs to identify whether the people living on the streets have alternative places to taking over sidewalks, what these are, and how they are utilizing those opportunities or not -- and they will not try to do that, either. Frankly, the City Attorney's office will not try to fight Sobel because she has successfully screwed up their confidence in prevailing against her, they are just concerned about how much they can give her clients to bring an end to the pain.

Sobel likes to think of herself as an advocate for those who our corrupt and intolerant society exploits and then tries to expell when used up. From this perception she proceeds under the assumption that justice for the downtrodden means responding to any efforts to maintain a civil society that involves legal sanctions affecting the homeless or any other perceived of discriminated against group with civil rights lawsuits. She's a working class hero in her own mind and anyone complaining about the uncivil behavior of the people for who she is acting the hero is an oppressor. This is why it's a mischaracterization to describe what she does as advocating for civil liberties.

If one considers the role of a civil liberties/rights advocate it's to counter act inequities by restoring the rights of people that have been deprived, not to give privileges to her clients by depriving all others of their rights -- that's what any old lawyer tries to do for their clients. Yet, if you consider Sobel's record, she acts to reduce the liberties of some to create privileges for others. When she is done, there is no net increase of the good experienced across our community, most people have lost some rights so that a few can act inconsiderately but with impunity.

So Sobel is going to court, again, and the City is likely to lose, again.

Sadly, Long Term makes a really good point.

All I can suggest is to shoot video and photos, day after day, for evidence of community impact. We need to email the city attorneys and ask them to make a defense, no matter how threatened they feel, against this assault on our community by a santa Monica outlander like Sobel.

Tie it all up in technicalities, did the plantiffs have thier PO box numbers at St. Josephs to legally establish standing on the date of the clean-up? If not, new more strict decisions about standing, recently issued from the Supreme Court, could tie the thing up before it is even adjudicated.

From WA via email:

Carol Sobel lives in Santa Monica yet sues to keep the homeless here in Venice. Sobel is very tight with Steve Clare of the Venice Community Housing Corporation. Steve Clare is one of the largest land developers in Venice, his development financing dependent on a large population of homeless people in Venice.

Here is what Carol Sobel and her friends are suing to keep here in Venice, with no regard to the health and welfare of the residents of Venice. The pictures were taken today on Washington.

We should raise funds to bus these people over to Carol Sobel's house so she can wake up to this in her front yard every day.

The image below illustrates the current conditions in Venice depicting the plight of the alleged "homeless victims" for which Santa Monica attorney Carol Sobel is again suing the City of Los Angeles for confiscating their abandoned property on 3rd St. The truly "homeless" have typically fallen on hard times from economic downturns,, jobs and home loss, medical catastrophes, etc. Another group who are seen on our streets in large numbers are there due to personal choices be they lifestyle choices or disregard for any form of personal integrity or accountability, an absence of personal or social dignity. The term "homeless" has become a catch all phrase distorting the reality of those we see on the streets, as in these photos, and lumping those who are there due to uncontrollable circumstances in their lives to those preferring life on the streets through personal choices and a preference for the edgy life and the old "bohemian" free and easy life at Venice Beach. The term homeless is not a one size fits all nicely category. Venice attracts a large number of people who love to use drugs and alcohol and be with others with the same interests. This makes Venice edgy, coupling the rich who dine, shop and live here with the "screw society, I don't live by rules" crowd. You would have to be blind or brain dead to not notice that a large number of people on Venice streets, misidentified as "homeless" are fallen and affixed to their continuing use of drugs and alcohol. Just go to any AA or NA meeting and the experts will tell you that if the addict continues with their use fixation they will wind up dead, imprisoned or placed in a mental institution. As mental institutions are no longer an option, the streets are where they end up and Venice is a magnet for such individuals. Back to the Sobel lawsuit. She may think she is more compassionate than the rest of us, but she needs a reality check and she obviously believes Venice should be home to those who lack regard for themselves but also all others in God's creation. She may also want to keep as many people who look desperate near her friend Steve Clare so that his business proves it is needed and continues to receive funding.

Two thoughts... First, Ms. Sobel should be suing the city of Santa Monica for summarily evicting all homeless folks out of her fair city, forcing them into Venice.  If she wants to fight for the homeless, she should be fighting for them to "reside" in her own municipality.

Second, if she's that concerned, she needs to give out the address of her office and her home and invite the "residents" of 3rd and Rose to camp, piss, crap, litter, loiter, prostitute, shoot up, deal and assault in her personal space.  Oh wait, she's in Santa Monica where that isn't allowed.

In-f'ing-credible...

Why would Ms. Sobel sue the city of Santa Monica. It is the city where she lives. She is the ultmite NIMBY crusader for the city of Santa Monica. Why would she care about the impact of the homeless on the residents of the Venice community. This Law suit is a far cry from finding a solution to the homeless situation. It just going to bleed the city of Los Angeles of much needed funds that could be used to find better solutions to the homeless problem. If she gets her way, we could be held liable for removing garbage from our streets.

We had our attorney check and we checked with the City Attorney.  It looks like this “claim” is a claim under the Tort Claims Act, which has to precede a lawsuit for damages against the City.  So, the Chronicle is in error in reporting that Sobel has filed a lawsuit.  It may get to that point, but it has not happened yet.

Does anyone know Ms. Sobel's address so we can print flyers to re-direct all the campers on 3rd Street to Ms. Sobel's front yard where they will surely be welcomed.

I kind of agree with Mark.  Let's see how Sobel likes that.

I'm showing that she lives in a 3 bedroom / 3 bath in 3,300 square feet just off of Montana.

She could surely fit a few of the downtrodden in there.....

I'm gonna borrow my parents' beat up old camper and park it with a pirates flag In front of her place.

Set up a free food tent on the sidewalk as well.

Sobel can see first hand for herself people taking a dump on her front lawn. It might just wake her up.
