My first apartment in Venice was right near Rose and Speedway.  I didn't have parking, and my work schedule varied so I came home at bizarre hours all the time.

If I could do it over again, I would not have lived in that particular spot.  Not only is it pretty sketchy at night, but the parking situation is absolutely horrific – sometimes I had to park on Hampton, or down Rose all the way near 3rd or 4th, and walk back to my apartment.  I was followed down the street on LOTS of occasions – and that was before the epic meth-party happening nowadays.

On weekends/in summer, FUGGEDABOUDIT.  If you don't find a spot before Friday night, plan on going out of town immediately. Have to run errands on a Saturday? HAHAHAHAHAHA!  Oh, did that space look legit? Nope! Here's another ginormous ticket!

If you want to live right near the beach, make sure you have parking. The more covered/gated/locked – the better, and on your property.  Otherwise, there are lots of wonderful little apartments and guest houses a few blocks inland!

Just say the Magic Words.

There is no safe place in Venice. Today the policewoman told me that my problem is not important to her because the police department  had homicide on the weekend to deal with… go figure… SO if you ask me, find a place in Santa Monica if you want to feel safe. Santa Monica used to be more expensive then Venice but no more so pay the same but get better city services and more normal neighbors, no offence to all Venetian after all the actual people that live in Venice are the minority now.

You may want to try an area further south. Women are out all the time with their dogs by the beach in the Venice Blvd to Washington Blvd area.

The concensus is a big NO. Find another place to live, spare yourself a lot of trouble. Sad isn't it? So different by day and by night.
