OfflineGot 20 building owners along OFW. Fifteen business owners and lots and lots of residents: all committed to a joint task force that will be reporting to Rosendahl and the LAPD and the Mayor's office. And that's just Day 1. Thank you to all that responded. It is important to show compassion to those less fortunate than us but for the druggies running up and down OFW in the middle of the night, be prepared because we are coming.

Offlinebrad, what makes you so sure that these people wont just come back to OFW after you run them off? I mean if they had somewhere else to go wouldn't they be there instead? You will have to be there every night. please don't get all mad im just pointing out an observation that they have all been run off the beach before and as recently as a few months ago if i recall. It is kind of like cutting the head off of a hydra if you ask me.

Hey Brad I agree with JAV, largely because there are no shelters out here for them to go to. As someone who works on "skid-row" I can tell you that it's the fact that there are services there (13 meals a day, and six emergency shelters) that keep most folks off the streets overnight. I think we need to make the "winter shelter" program year round, let them sleep at the armory and maybe accept some social services while they are there…
That being said I would love to be a part of your task-force, hit me up at rickgarvey@hotmail.com
peace, Rick

I work on Skid Row at least twice per month – and I (as well as the women I work with) think that the shelter system – especially the "winter shelter program" – are incredibly f'd up. When a human being walks into a shelter, they and the people servicing them should be making a 24/7 commitment to getting those people WELL – not just toodling them around in a bus, having them come-and-go, having belongings stolen, being abused, or simply getting a free meal. This gross disrespect of very ill people as well as residents is a horrific example of government gone…well…LAZY. I am absolutely NOT supportive of providing Disneyland for anyone.
Brad, I'm in. I'll call you in the morning.

OfflineThank you again for the massive response I have been receiving through YoVenice. I definitely do not think just running people off the beach is the answer. However, regardless of the current District Court decision with regard to sleeping on sidewalks within 10 feet of a structure, there are plenty of laws available to stop the madness that I witnessed first hand two nights ago. As I stated in the first post, many homeless people were, in fact, sleeping. But a substantial number were not. They were definitely high on stimulants (being a recovering addict myself I would believe I witnessed folks on speed/meth, crack ((I did see a few glass pipes being lit with that darn crackling sound)), so first we can remove these people immediately for drug possession/use/sales. Additionally, the party people were loud and boisterous (screaming, yelling, screeching their bike brakes, even a frickin gas powered skateboard) in the middle of the night. So we are gonna get them for public nuisance, disturbing the peace etc..
With regard to encampment and the legal challenges ahead, I will most likely work in conjunction with other groups like Venice Stakeholders and the rapidly growing list of building owners that have eagerly pledged their support to the task force that Rosendahl has requested that I help set up. Compassion is an important foundation to start from but I will never condone enabling bad or destructive behavior.

I'm astounded by decisions like that. While vagrancy laws are on the books it's now OK to break them as long as you do it 10 feet away from a structure.
Is that the goal? To get all the activity 10 feet from your building?
I'm salty and that's what keeps me spicy ©
