"Another thing I notice about TJ's is that by all accounts they are essentially a supermarket but none of their stores so far have anywhere near the same square footage as the typical modern supermarket even if you took out the banking and Starbucks, service deli and bakery."

They don't have a number of competing brands – keeping house brands keeps them price competitive and there is little duplication of products.

Does anyone remember the "first" one on National and Westwood…OMG that was a such a small store and parking lot. You really had to mentally prepare yourself to attempt a shopping there.
Yes Verona, I remember that store, (I went to Uni. High, class of '74), it was the first Trader Joe's I ever shopped at, and it was a really awkward location.
And since I am an AWOAK (Always West Of Abbot Kinney) kinda guy, and prefer not to drive and don't own a car, I am not often near a T.J.'s, and I really like their products. Guess I'll have to keep waiting, and going there when I can. I find none of their current locations convenient, but I can survive without T.J.'s in Venice/MDR, maybe just barely though.
Thanks for the memory!

Myrna was a statue in front of the high school for a long time, right? Cool avatar.(e.g. the model).
Correct! Although a statue still stands there today, just not the original.

Seems to me that if someone wanted to make a couple of bucks they could do so by making a "Trader Joe's" delivery business …
A few years ago some people in Mammoth Lakes tried doing just that with no success. Of course they were dealing with 100's of miles and many hours of driving just to get a few TJ's specialty items and then of course the savings just didn't add up when the well stocked, local VONS is sitting right there in their town.

Mr AWOAK-d00d, you're a rarity in this city. You are aware of this invention they have now? It's called a bicycle. I used to be a AWOP and felt sorry for EOP's like you.
