Checking my daily RSS feeds and saw on LAist that Complex magazine has a list of the "25 Douchiest Bars in Los Angeles". The list makes me wonder if Complex author Lizzie Donaldson actually lives in LA. Some of her picks would make my list, but is Baja Cantina even known as a "bar"? A bar that gets listed over the 9-0 at USC (which is not on the list)?
Donaldson's list:
1. Saddle Ranch
2. Cabo Cantina (all of them)
5. The Brig
10. Townhouse
12. Brennan's Pub
18. Circle Bar
20. Baja Cantina
22. O'Brien's
As Ken has commented on Complex's website: "Either she hasn't been to enough bars in LA to write this article or she only slept with guys that didn't call her back from these bars. A douche can be found at any bar in LA."
My list of Douchiest Venice bars:
#1 the Other Room – hate the crowded angry ambiance there
#2 very close second because these guys have a dress code requirement and bad bouncer energy "The Townhouse" which i used to love when it was a dive bar. I loved all the old Venice dive bars
#3 Larrys – hate the place
#4 Nikki's kind of cheesy but not horrible
I like the following Venice bars:
#1 Hinano – a great relic to things of past
#2 Venice Alehouse – Great people great IPA
#3 Danny's – not techinically a bar but they serve booze there with the food
#4 Brig – can be Douchey but has good music at times
#5 Santinos -Thursday nights live music rocks
#6 Love and hate the whaler. Love the accoustic and karoke nights for locals, hate it rest the time

There's a real anti-UCLA bias here too. Not that the places in Westwood, or for that matter Q's are not full of douchy UCLA fratboys, but compared to the SC places down in the South Bay (of which she lists exactly one) or as Bret said, 9-0 which is right at USC, they're all relatively tame. And what of the endless douchbagginess of everything along Ventura Blvd, the endless string of places where down-and-going porn "stars" regularly mingle with "not going anywhere" would-be bass players?
I think what happened to Town House sucks and am old enough to remember when the Brig was a bar I considered worthy of going to. But neither would be anywhere on my top 25 list. The only place in Venice that might is the Other Room.
I don't even consider Baja and Cabo to be bars.
Dumb piece.

I remember when The Brig and especially The Circle Bar were actually bars and not velvet-roped, high-priced, girly drink, douche-magnets.
Things change…
i recall one visit to the circle bar in the mid 90s….cigarette smoke was so thick that you could barely see to the other side of the bar. so thick that we completey missed the fistfight taking place.
and then there was the old townhouse, characters behind the bar, a cat ON the bar, and plastic bags full of 24oz steinlagers "to go" at the end of the night.
yes, things do change.

Hiinanos should be listed on the 'National List of Historic Drinking Places" – up there with "the No. 10 Saloon" in Deadwood, "the Horse You Came In On" in Baltimore, the Algonquin Hotel bar room in NYC. So much character in a relatively small place: a national treasure in our town!
Amen!

AAhh Gypsy. I agree with Ka-Ka. Those were the days, watching Bonnie Ratt and Sting across the bar. Just how many different t-shirts did she own : ) Nice lady. Those days are gone and they truly did put the F U in FUN!
The Author shows her true colors by the title of her article…What women uses the word "Douchiest"? I sooo agree with the comment on her: "Either she hasn't been to enough bars in LA to write this article or she only slept with guys that didn't call her back from these bars".
Seems she must have been the wallflower while all her good looking friends were having a great time. The one that always wants to leave for one reason or another when she is the one not getting attention. Boo hoo
