The Abbot Kinney bike thief is having a great time.
He's unstopped he's unchecked, he's cutting through cable and steel, he's been chased, he's been recognized and still- he keeps coming.
Don't leave valuable bikes unnattended in our neighborhood.
I have heard of 6 stolen in the last month. Ridiculous.
Just spread the word- even to strangers you see parking their tricked out babies. It's like we're tying up our bikes with silly string.

I was just thinking we need a bait bike. Turn out there are a few, with some interesting ideas behind them.
http://www.baitbike.com/Home_Page.html
Highlights:
-Get a nice, high demand bike with a recognizable name (TREK)
-Add a hidden tracking device akin to a wildlife radio transmitter
-Ensure value of bike is high enough that theft is automatically a felony
-Lock it up on Abbot Kinney with a cable lock
-Wait for the fun to start

Or train a webcam on it and post the thief on Youtube so he or she can be identified.

I spoke with the LAPD's Community Liaison Officer about this (2 bikes were stolen from the parking garage in my building), and she said there's a ring of thieves using cordless power tools to cut the locks. She did say that they know who the thieves are, and are close to catching them. Hopefully that's true….

cop always say they "know who they are"
total bullshit….
they arrest someone who looks the part ..
they dont care if it really is the person theyre looking for…
they say "you can do the time .. or you can point the finger at someone else"
thats it…thats how cops work…. you think theres lots of detective work going on at 711..??
they "always get their man"…and you pay the bill…

I thought the 7-11 on Lincoln was the actual Venice stationhouse for the LAPD.
Seems to be where they congregate all hours of the day…

Heh-heh, yeah well 7-11 is a popular spot for crooks as well. Years ago a well known Venice druggie family had a daughter who beat one of the clerks to death with a bat for refusing to sell liquor to her boyfriend. The cops hang around but it's not as though there isn't some bad history there. Too bad about the bike, but we can expect more and more of this as the convicts released as parolees count, continues to rise and as the grunge crews continue to take up shop in Venice. Property crimes rose last year in Venice and I bet the numbers will rise again.

In recent history a certain town in the mountains known for it's ski resort experienced a rash of stolen snowboards.
They set up a sting operation where a board was left alongside all the other boards outside the lodge.
Sure as shit, the thieves took the bait and the cops were able to follow them back to their lair to find a whole bunch of stolen snowboards and to bust the thieving kooks.
I'm just sayin'.

All of you secret agents with your bike-tracking equipment are the solution.

I'm being sarcastic.
The real solution is for someone to deliver a swift kick in the ass to this miscreant the next time he is seen in flagrante delicto.
