It's alive, so I guess I'll go first…
My name is Emil. I live off of Abbot Kinney. My office is on Mildred. And I commute on a skate board.
I helped Keri and Bret build out this forum. If you have any technical questions, let me know…

Yo!
I'm Leila. New to Venice. I live on Abbot Kinney. I was a lawyer for 10 years and now I'm “finding myself”. Taking graphic design classes at night and exploring Venice by day.

HI! I too just discovered Yo!Venice and am enjoying hearing about everything going on! I just moved here too, love Venice and feel very safe here. Our area is very friendly, people look out for each other rather than stay behind closed doors and high fences, and there are more cyclists and skateboarders around than other parts of the city which makes it even nicer!

I am new here. Just found YoVenice! b/c of the unfortunate situation on AK Blvd last night. I like the site and appreciate the time everyone is putting into it with all the information. I live on Grand Blvd. Been here for 1.5 years, owned a marketing agency for 7 years, closed it December 2006, traveled around the world and now just looking for my next life's purpose….but enjoying my community everyday as much as possible. I love that I don't have to drive my car and can walk/ ride bike just about any place. I live in a HUGE city…..but Venice makes me feel like I am an island in the ocean. I like it lots.

Emil, you wouldn't happen to be in an office on the South side of Mildred near Pacific would you? I've always wondered what businesses had offices in a few of those buildings. My guess was product design/ad agency….eh eh eh?
Anyways, I'm Steve. I found the site becuase of the AK shooting thing too. I lived off the 90 on Centinela for awhile, then moved to Pacific and Mildred for a bit and now live off Electric and San Juan.

Yup. Exactly. I'm in the building that could be a movie theatre but is decidedly NOT a movie theatre. :) And as for what we do… Come over some time and say “Hi”.

Awesome, I will.
I lived at the Windward Apartments across the street I always wondered who scored that space, its nice. I'm rockin the homeless lumberjack beard these days so I was hesitant to just pop my head in before, was afraid I get a face full of hot coffee . I work for Sony Imageworks in Culver City, as soon as I see a somewhat related creativey spot I am always curious.

Hello Yo! Venice
I've been reading for awhile and think you're doing a fantastic job! And thanks to Emil for putting together the forum.
I've been in Venice for 9.5 years and have lived in three different neighborhoods. It was the first place I moved to in LA and I've never lived anywhere else. Currently I live off Victoria & Linden which is a great neighborhood, very residential and lots of families. And the walk streets in this area are awesome!

We live here with 2 very little kids. Itis rough even to walk on the boardwalk, with reckless skateborders and bikes that go too fast along that walk path. We also have a very old grandfather who walks at night to and from our home. Is it safe? We used ot think it was. Just small time economic crime. I am wondering if anyone reading these posts knows an approximate number of violent crimes and drug or alcohol related accidents in Venice every year.
Thanks if you do or if you can reccomend a resource.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for introducing yourselves!
Coparota, the Crime Maps Zoshua linked to is really interesting. I am not able to search specific dates on it when I use Safari - so if you have trouble, try another web browser.
Also, the LAPD Pacific Division website has a list of crime statistics and stuff. http://www.lapdonline.org/pacific_community_police_station

Hi All -
Just moved out to Venice in May from New York City. Live a few blocks from Abbot Kinney on Broadway. Venice was the only place that made me feel 'at home' in a New York City-neighborhood-interesting-people kind of way. And it is by the beach. I have loved living here, and just a few hours before the shooting had proclaimed my love of this neighborhood after having spent the day at the Festival and biking along the beach. Despite the shooting, and the drug dealers posted on my block, I have to say I can't really complain about being here. This blog is great, and hopefully I can continue to learn about and explore my new home!

Hi Kosha! Welcome to Venice. I'm from NYC as well. I lived out here in Venice in the the late 90's and moved back a few years ago because I missed it. Venice natives HATE to hear anyone compare Venice to NYC or hear us express how it feels like home to us. But most people I talk to have moved here from other cities and feel the same way we do. We live here because we love it here. It doesn't matter if we were born here or not.
I'm sorry that there was something as awful as a shooting within your first few months living here. The day we closed on our house, there was a major police chase and shooting that night within a few blocks of here. I felt like “welcome back to Venice!” It was so much worse in the late 90's though.

Yo, yeah! Jetpower here, from points east (direct from Chitown in 1978); 30th year in Hell-A (Oct 17 or 18 anniv.), took 19 years to move to Venice. Met old-timer Charlie Frederick at the Taurus Tavern in 1980, began what became a 16-year music career performing w/him on the boardwalk. Geekster now, and working on the community dialogue. Yo is doing great. You'll see me around!

Just moved to Venice a week ago, discovered this blog researching the city. It is an AWESOME blog by the way, seriously one of the best local blogs I have found for any city.
I'm self employed and work from home so I'm going to be spending a lot of time in Venice! I live on Pacific near Venice Blvd. My company helps companies and celebrities w/ online promotion using their website and social media.

We had 30k page views last week alone, so people are hip to what we are all doing here in Venice all around the globe! Feel free to start your own threads asking for volleyball pals or paddle board friends and all that … that is why the forums are here.

Greetings. Great job on the site. I have been checking it out regularly, so I thought I would jump on in. My quest to live near the beach has finally ended after many years in Green Bay, Milwaukee, Boston, Madison, Dallas and most recently across the street from The Grove on 3rd St. I live on Abbot Kinney and the neighborhood is more vibrant and relaxed than the Fairfax area (well, before 11:00 pm on weekends anyway). I was surprised by the number of late night weekend trendsters roaming the streets, but it's all good.
Keep up the good work.

Hi, I'm Kellee and I found this site via Steve (aka Beaver)! I used to live on Indiana and 6th, now I'm on Westminster across from the dog park. I've lived in Venice now 2 1/2 years, been in LA 5yrs. My aunt has lived in the Venice Canals 30 years, so I learn everything about Venice and LA history from her (maybe we could organize a speaker series or somethin!). Oh yeah, and I make video games in Santa Monica, so the commute along the beach rulz.
I also moved here from NYC - I guess the neighborhood attracts us! I love the ecletic feel of the area, and I love the commitment to preserving a Venice culture. I wish there was a stronger sense of community and neighborhood pride - I mentioned this over in the “What does Venice need” conversation. I was thinking of creating a blog/forum to help with this, and voila! Turns out you guys did it, so I'm stoked to see it grow! Have you thought about mailing postcards out to everyone in the area to let them know this is here? Or maybe an ad in the Argonaut? Great work!

Hi All,
Another NYC transplant here. Came to Venice around 3 years ago on some short term contract work and never left. I think its the energy that Venice gives off at night that I love that is so similar to NYC. It's electic. It's here and now.
All that tied in with a beach community. Gotta love it.
The bums are the same - just smarter (why would you be a bum in nyc anyway).
Cheers, jan

Hello everyone:
I bought my dream house on Bernard Avenue in 2000 and I haven't been involved in community politics until recently. I have a six foot fence around the front of my house and I am in the process of applying for a variance to permit my fence (I was 'turned in' by a meddling neighbor). I had the good fortune of meeting Keri at the VNC meeting last night who let me know about this site. Looks fantastic!
