Can you eat at non franchise places and have 3 square meals and a single drink in Venice for 20 bucks a day these days?
Me?
Breakfast burrito at El Tarasco with some water for breakfast … around 7 bucks with a tip.
Lunch time chicken shawarma wrap with included salad and water at Gabbys for around 9 bucks with a tip.
Sunset burger and one beer at Hinano for around 12 bucks with tip.
I'm already over budget and I started the thread.
Suggestions?

HHmm….that's tricky. It's the tips that get ya! Cafe Collage has some pretty cheap breakfast offerings–small, but cheap. There's a coffee & bagel special for under $5 and they do a nice ham & cheese croissant for under $5 as well–so probably $6 or $7 with tip. Zelda's also has some inexpensive breakfast sammiches. For lunch, I'd go super cheap and do one of the pizza slice specials from the boardwalk, so maybe $5 total. There's also a really cheap mini food court on Westminster across from Groundworks, I've never been but I think you can get deals on Indian or Thai for about $5. And for dinner I'd do happy hour at Nikki's….Nachos (without meat) for only $4 and glass of wine for $3.50. So $10 total. Not a lot of tip though…and I know Nachos aren't really that square of a meal, but they're huge and filling.

now that there is a whole foods, at least one of those meals can be snacking on free samples! although, that probably doesn't meet the non-franchise requirement.
for lunch or even dinner, the $8 mao's kitchen won ton soup is great.

I think you could definitely do a day on $20 from the boardwalk food. Not sure if you'd live to tell about it though . . .
Nice to see that people are assuming tip at counter places, I just moved from Chicago and it seems like people are much better tippers here.

I think it is very possible to eat for under $20 a day. I am a vegetarian in Venice and have found great options and cheap too! For breakfast, Rose Cafe is great, for a cup of coffee and homemade granola its about $6. For lunch Abbot's Habit has a great veggie sandwich and veggie chili, about $7. For dinner, a veggie burrito (or any choice of meat) for $5 at Pepe's Tacos. Thats $18 not including tips and all the food will keep you full all day!
