I am in a desperate search for a good, go-to, hole-in-the-wall, affordable sushi place near Venice. Emphasis on affordable. Suggestions?

Kifune on Dell at Washington is a pretty square deal as far as food and value. Cheaper than Hama and often much better.

Yes on Kifune! We used to go all the time; always good fish, but better the last couple of years, and forever down-home; furn and comfortable sushi bar. For take-out, it's Asakuma, in the little shopping mall on Washington and Abbot Kinney; call ahead, and expect very fresh; I just get a few things there, to savor and still have survival change.

Kifune was good last night - the artichokes weren't so good though. Maybe they aren't in season. Jay - friendly and welcoming as always.

I can't say I agree about Kifune. But then there are only two things I can really pretend to be a snob about and sushi is one of them. Kufine is ok middle of the road stuff, I liked hama's fish better. Don't remember prices. I mean we're not talking urusawa kind of silliness here, but I've yet to find a sushi place that has a good variety of fish (a major sticking point with kifune), and consistent quality.
Frankly I'd go to whole foods for better fish than kifune. Yes I said it.

my hands down favoite sushi for quality, fresh and affordable is Otom's on Sepulveda between Venice and Washington. the sign out front says Sushi Ya and was previously owned and run by Katsu. But is has new owners since last Decemeber and it's still definitely worth the drive. get the albacore sushi or sashimi and lobster hand roll. mmmmmm!

Don't make me go east, or I'll recommend Karen's in CC, on Washington across the street from Best Buy. Sit at the bar, order from Toshi-san and ask questions. You'll get ridiculous toro (”oily”), always great uni and the best “sure thing” appetizer around: red snapper sashimi special. Don't expect sushi shaped like animals - it's just the fish, ma'am.
Otom's? I remember going to that location years ago, when the fish was mediocre; even so, I liked the place. Will try again.

Other options besides Kifune? Bad breakup-over-dinner association. I will check out Otom's. I wish we had more strip-mall sushi around here!
