In this market you would be better off getting one that was a frame off resto 10 years ago than that at 40 (not meeting reserve) … that thing looks like it needs all the floor pans just from the pictures, trunk rust … ya don't want to bondo it so you need someone with a pin hammer, some lead and a lot of time … rebuild the engine, new bumpers are not cheap if you get originals … you could easily have 70k into a restore which puts you above what you could get one that has already been gone thru as that is now a driver.

the banjo steering wheel is nice tho.

I think the idea that this seller is pushing is that you should buy the car and drive it around as-is. Of course,

being ever alert to the possibility of the transmission falling thru the floor on a tight corner.

Good news is the tranny was rebuilt back in 1970 so no need to worry yourself with that until 15 years ago.

LOL. And at least it isn't British so you won't have to keep a hanger to hold up the exhaust pipe or a roll of duct tape for emergencies.

Friend got a (very good condition straight panels and rolling) 914 for $500 last year off craigslist in long beach (engine in a box we threw in my car). He will have about 15k? into it when it is all rebuilt (7 in paint, 1.2? in chrome for the bumpers, 3 for the engine rebuild as the major $ items) … could flip for 20? high of 30? or so (all numbers match) but won't. It isn't a 914-6 but if you want a "soon to be collectible" 914's are getting bought up these days … many have gone the way of the salvage yard so solid Calif. cars will be in demand soon. That said, I think 914's are fugly even tho they are a great mid-engine porka.

The 914-6 was great but as you say,"fugly"

i'm seeing quite few fully restored 912s lately.  Simple 4 cyl and few problems.

Lots of 912's are used for '73 RS clones (that are done right) these days … if you can find a 912T soft window POUNCE on it.  $$$ upcomer, yo!

912- 6's (if a 3.2L or more) run around 17k to shape up just for the engine by the way. (6's, not 4's – 4 is 3k or so if all the parts are there and no huge issues, just a rebuild.)

I was just looking at a '69 912T soft window down in Orange County. Beautiful car. Black. Original interior. I have a '64 356C and agree that these cars are really simple and trouble free. Can't imagine any new car today still rolling 50 years from now.

Had a '64 356C cabriolet in the mid to late '70s. If I close my eyes I can still picture myself behind the wheel and the feel of the car sitting down into 4th gear. The only car I've owned I still mourn having to sell.
