I don't really want to pay my landlord $30 to make a duplicate key for the building. Seems absurd. Does anyone know a locksmith who will make duplicates of those "do not duplicate" keys? I tried the locksmith on AK and the Kim's market and neither would.

It's a safety issue. I assume you live in a secure building with some sort of a call system. If this is indeed the case, then it would be in the best interest of management not to have an abundance of cheap keys running around. Though I am sure you could just put a piece of duct tape over the part that says "do not duplicate" so the guy who makes them won't even notice.

You just have to pay extra to the locksmith, usually around $10, in my experience. ANy of the places on Lincoln can do it.

Hrmmm… Tried the little locksmith stand by the 7-11 on Lincoln/Washington. Before I could even hand her the key she said "no." Didn't think of trying to the little hardware store on Lincoln south of Rose. They guy at the register there seems somewhat upstanding.

You need a notorized letter from the building owner/manager to do it, typically. When we had it done at work we asked them to make it on a regular Key Blank instead of the DND. Now we can make copies without the letter. Maybe you can print one out from online or photoshop one up.

No the Lincoln Hardware guy is a mean old man when it comes to key copying. I've had success with the little shop in the parking lot of Ocean Park and Lincoln, by the Albertsons, or is it Ralphs now? Anyway he's done three for me of the DO NOT DUPLICATE.
Happy duplicating.

I'm with Jack C. I have in the past had it done for me at the Albertson's parking lot. Lincoln & Oceanpark!

Wait a minute…. aren't these the same upstanding citizens who wail and gnash their teeth whenever someone breaks the law, threatening neighbors? Why is anyone aiding and abetting in a clearly criminal plot, why would they?
Imagine the whining if an illegally copied key was used to rob your house. Aaah the stench of hypocrisy!
Pay the 30 bucks, tight ass.

Buddha, check your paranoia meter…as defender of the right to replace your house-key for under $30 bucks when they only cost $2.00 I reject your conclusion as inconclusive and lacking any shred of proof of evildoing. Now, snichols, don't make a liar out of me and start burning down the building and molesting small puppies. I stuck my neck out for you. ;-P
