+1 for the coffee at B1 Breadshop. The french-press-in-a-cup is genius, and yummy. That and a fresh baguette is all I need.

Bellissimo on N. Venice at Pacific serves great Italian style cappuccinos & americanos. And they have great croissants too.

The coffee at Deus Ex Machina is very good (Handsome roasters), although Intelligentsia is still better over all. Local 1205 also uses Handsome but I haven't tried it there.

I thought the baguette I had from B1 Breadshop was excellent, and the croissant nearing perfect, but still not up to the level of Tartine in San Francisco. The flour in the B1 croissant could hold a little more butter.

whoa…i thought the lamination at B1 was pretty much perfect, must be close to 1:1. …buttery flavor, crisp on the edges…tartine is certainly america's best bakery but i don't think their croissants are much (if at all) better than the one (i know, i know) i had down the street. (aside: have you made the croissants from the tartine cookbook?? the butter block is about 400g light to me).  plus, the commute to B1 is much easier than the one to tartine.

love deus and the vibe and the coffee…and agree that overall intelligentsia is a better cup.  but i just love being deus so damn much. and 1205 FINALLY fixed that lame support that was at eye-height in the walk-up window!! you don't have to bend down and hope the barista can hear you anymore!!
