L&M are heavy hitters in the gallery world that have featured the works of artists such as Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Mark Rothko, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Julian Schnabel and local homie Ed Ruscha.

Partially housed in a historic brick building used as a power plant in the 30′s, an additional gallery building by architect Kulapat Yantrasast of the architecture firm wHY Architecture adds space to the location while emulating the look of the older historic wing. The two buildings will feature roughly 2400 square feet of exhibition space with an additional 4,000 square feet of garden space used for sculpture.

The first show at the gallery will feature artist Paul McCarthy and run from September 25 – November 6, 2010.

About L&M Arts:

L&M Arts, a modern and contemporary art gallery located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, was founded when Robert Mnuchin and Dominique Lévy merged their two distinct but complementary firms in 2005. With this show, L&M Arts announced that is it the representative of Yves Klein in North America.

Other exhibitions of considerable impact have included:
• Tom Wesselmann: The Sixties– the first major exhibition of this iconic Pop artist’s work since his death in 2004 and the first comprehensive survey of the period ever held in New York
• Willem de Kooning: Paintings (1975 – 1978) – a re-examination of this controversial period in the artist’s career that was also the subject of C&M Arts’s founding exhibition
• Elemental Form– a large scale survey of works from the Sixties and the Seventies, by a broad group of artists who reconsidered the basic question of painting and sculpture
• Willem de Kooning: 1981-1986- a compelling selection of large scale paintings created by the artist in his late career

In addition to Yves Klein, L&M Arts also represents the Estate of Joseph Cornell. Also while L&M Arts is well known for its dealings in the secondary 20th century market, the gallery is increasingly committed to working with living artists. Recent exhibitions of contemporary art have included a Jeff Koons retrospective in 2004 and in 2007 the gallery exhibited new works by David Hammons and Richard Wathen. Shayne set out on his cross country skateboard journey in honor and memory of his father William “Chief” Carlson, a CIA contractor who was killed during an ambush in Shkin, Afghanistan, in October 2003. Traveling an average of 50 miles a day and stopping at military bases along the way to raise funds for charities that help wounded special ops soldiers and their families, Shayne has raised over $25,000.

It is expected that on Wednesday, after a 3,200 journey, Shayne will reach the Pacific shore in Venice at 2pm. We have heard from Bobby at Venice Originals Skate Shop that following a press conference at the shop, Shane will hit the beach and the Venice Skate Park for some celebrating.

During the 2nd Annual Venice Beach Summer Fest on July 24th-25th, a group of like-minded Zombie/ Jackson fans will be getting their “Thriller” on down at the beach.

Hello Thrilling Zombies,

We have another opportunity to surprise people by performing Thriller at one of the most crowded events of the summer – the 2nd Annual Summer Festival in Venice Beach. The festival will take place on July 24th-25th and will attract more than 15,000 people during the 2 day weekend. This is a great opportunity for us to put on our zombie gear and continue recruiting more zombies. This is going to be so much… FUN!!!!!

The Summer Fest will be opening with a walk for charity to support the homeless in Venice Beach and performing arts. We will be doing the walk in the dancing moves of Thriller. YAY!!!!! A donation of $3-$5/participant would be more than appreciated by the “Send Me A Penny”, the non-profit organization supporting Venice Beach. We’ll not only raise awareness about Thrill the World Los Angeles, but will be making a contribution in helping others, exactly what Michael would have done. Let’s take his example and keep his legacy alive.

The walk will end at the stage and open Summer Fest with Food and live bands, performers, and lots of fun. After the walk, we’ll have the opportunity to perform Thriller near the stage area. Because it’s a fun festival that fits the need of the entire family, please invite your family and all your friends to come and support you. You can chose to dress up as zombie or not, but we’d like to have at least 25 zombies to do the dance during the walk and at the stage.

This is a TWO DAY EVENT, which will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, July 24th and 25th 2010. The schedule is the same for both days, as follows:

July 24th & 25th, 2010:
- 7:00 am (no later than 7:30 am): meeting at the intersection of Ocean Front Walk and Dudley Ave, right at the corner of the Rose parking lot, in full zombie gear.
- 8:30 am: The walk will start and it will open Venice Summer festival. We will be walking on Ocean Front Walk, from the Rose Parking Lot to Windward Circle, where the stage and bands will be located. It is a short walk of approximate 0.6 miles. During the walk, we’ll surprise visitors and participants by performing Thriller.
- 9:00 am: The walk ends at the stage area, where we’ll be performing and held a workshop for approximate 30 minutes
- 9:30 am – 12:00 pm: BREAK to enjoy the activities at the Summer Fest
- 12:00 pm: second performance on stage and workshop for another 30 minutes.

The Venice Vintage Motorcycle Rally will be held Sunday, July 11th, 2010 at “The Yard” at 715 Hampton Drive.

The meet up is a fun time and free to the public. Events include a morning 10am ride, the bike rally from 11-5 and an after party from 5-10pm. Recently the FAA tried a six month test pattern at The Santa Monica Airport which directed departure traffic over Santa Monica and not the usual route over Venice.

The City of Santa Monica is not happy about new IFR departure procedures and says it will “aggressively pursue all avenues” to force the FAA to conduct a full environmental impact study before any change is made permanent.

The previous procedure had general aviation airplanes flying to the coastline before making a 40 degree Northwest turn. Several of the new patterns that were tested move that turn to a point over Penmar Golf Course, which then take the aircraft over a residential neighborhood near the Santa Monica Pier.

Needless to say, Santa Monica residents don’t want the traffic sent their way and have sent in over 3,500 emails saying “reject the test pattern” to city officials.

The FAA makes the ultimate decision on whether the test pattern should be made permanent, so Venice Residents need to email their opinions to those who matter and make sure the traffic pattern is put into effect and allows for a more equal distribution of noise, rather than just dumping the Santa Monica Airport Traffic and pollution all over Venice.

So here is the email to write:

I am writing you to voice my opinion on the recent FAA Test Pattern held at The Santa Monica Airport (KSMO). The new test pattern should be made permanent as it more fairly distributes the burden of Santa Monica Airport departures between Venice and Santa Monica. I have also been informed that this new pattern provides for better safety in regard to air traffic from LAX. Please realize that Venice is not an industrial zone, it is a zone of families just like Santa Monica, and we should not have to shoulder the burden of this traffic ourselves.

What to do at a Hands Event:

STEP 1
Go to the beach at 11 AM in your time zone for one hour, rain or shine.

STEP 2
Join hands for 15 minutes at 12:00 forming lines in the sand against oil drilling in our coastal waters.

STEP 3
Leave only your footprints.

Overall production days were up 25% compared to last year, so it is a good sign that productions are returning to Los Angeles and dumping a lot of money in our town. We have heard complaints before by some of the shops and buskers along Ocean Front Walk that productions ruin their business while shooting, but many of those complaints seem somewhat exaggerated. Here is a colorful “pay us to shoot our store front in the background or I’ll put up a sign like this” that a shop tried on a production company.

As I have never been personally inconvenienced by a production company shooting in Venice (the worst was some noise from Californiacation at night near Holly Ct and Ocean at an ex’s crib), I have no complaints about it. To me, its all the remodeling nail guns early in the morning that suck!

The organizers are looking for a Venice-based Salsa band, some fire-tagged 10 x 10 canopies, prize donations, 1000 or so “eco-friendly” paper plates and contestants for the BBQ competition.

Tomorrow evening from 6-9 pm, The St. Joseph Center’s Culinary Training Program will spotlight Italian dishes perfect for summer entertaining at its “Culinary Experience Fundraiser”. The featured class instructor will be Milan born Chef Roberto Maggioni who has worked in such renown spots as La Pergola in London, Il Giardino in Mallorca, Spain, several notable restaurants in France and Lago here in Los Angeles.
