Well known, well respected and well loved tattoo artist John “SWAG” Knowles died on Sunday of a brain aneurysm while at home in Venice. SWAG was 43.
Originally from England, Knowles had been a presence in Venice for over two decades, starting at Tattoo Asylum on Windward before opening his own Tattoo Lounge on Venice Blvd. His legacy of art lives on through his many clients as well as his collaborations with Oscar Galan on the “Hecho en Venice” line.
There will be a Paddle Out memorial starting at 9 am on Sunday, December 9th at the Venice Pier.

The St. Joseph Center’s Thrift Store at 1828 Lincoln Boulevard is closing on January 5th. The center moved to this location in March of 2010 after closing their Venice location.
From the St. Joseph Center:
Thank you so much for your past support of St. Joseph Center’s Thrift Store. Given the continuing economic challenges that have impacted many small businesses, and despite a great deal of work to improve operations over the last few years, we have found it difficult to maintain profitability.
As a result, our Thrift Store will be closing on January 5, 2013. The last day we are able to pick up donations will be December 14, 2012. However, we will still accept donations dropped off at the store until January 4. Inventory clearance sales will take place during our regular business hours throughout December (please note that we will be closed December 25 & 26 for Christmas). Continue reading
The Great Venice Toy Drive Holiday Festival is less than a week away! If you haven’t left a new, unwrapped, non-violent toy at one of our drop-off locations, now is the time to do so! Please visit one of our partners by December 6 and look for the bin with our flier! Drop off locations include Abbot’s Habit, The Cow’s End and Oscars Cerveteca/ Venice Beach Wines! We will also be at the Venice Farmers’ Market on December 7th!
We will be giving the toys away at Oakwood Recreation Center on Saturday December 8 from 10am-2pm. Help is still needed for the event. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact us via email by clicking here! If you’d like to lend out a large holiday decoration (fake trees, etc.) for the day, we will happily take that too and return it to you after the event. More than anything, however, we need those toys! Please pitch in in any way possible and help us make December 8 a superfantastic day for Venice kids!
